Police fatally shoot 18 year old black outside St. Louis

An 18 year old black man was shot and killed by police at a gas station in the St. Louis suburb of Berkely, Missouri Tuesday night.

Police said in a statement the man pointed a handgun at the officer when he approached him and another man.

Local media have identified the victim as 18 year old Antonio Martin. They say this person was his mother.

(SOUNDBITE) English PERSON CLAIMING TO BE THE MOTHER OF THE DECEASED:

"They won't tell me nothing, his girlfriend told me that the police was messing with him. He was fitting to get up and run- and he was trying to get up and run, they started shooting him."

Local media say people had gathered at the scene after the incident.

Berkeley is minutes away from the suburb of Ferguson, where police officer Darren Wilson shot and killed 18 year old Michael Brown in an incident that sparked protests nation wide.
