Delhi police on Sunday (December 7) arrested an Uber cab driver accused of raping his passenger.

Shiv Kumar Yadav was arrested in the city of Mathura in northern Uttar Pradesh state.

An inquiry was launched after a 26-year-old woman reported she had been sexually assaulted and beaten by the driver of the cab she hired after a social event late on Friday (December 5) in Vasant Vihar, south Delhi.

The cab was hired through Uber, the U.S. online taxi service that has launched an aggressive international expansion.

Police were able to track down the 32-year-old driver even though he had switched off his mobile phone to avoid being traced.

Yadav allegedly dropped the woman home after attacking her and warned her not to inform the authorities.

However she was able to note the number of the vehicle and photograph it as it drove away. It was later found
