Family of an American hostage in Yemen plead for his release.

The family of an American hostage in Yemen are calling for his release after seeing him in a video produced by Al Qaeda's Yemen branch purporting to show Luke Somers and threatening to kill him if unspecified demands were not met.

In a video, a man and woman identify themselves as Somers' family members and plead for his release. Reuters is unable to independently verify the content of the video, which was posted on YouTube and social media on Thursday (December 4).

Somers, a 33-year-old journalist, was kidnapped in Yemen's capital Sanaa in September 2013, joining several other foreigners including Westerners held by militant Sunni Muslim armed groups in the volatile Arabian peninsula country.

The family member said they were unaware of a raid last week by Yemeni and U.S. forces that targeted an AQAP hideout where a number of foreign hostages were being held.
