Hong Kong student leaders detained as police clear protest site

Dozens of people have been arrested in Hong Kong during a police operation to end a pro-democracy protest.
Joshua Wong and Lester Shum, two of the student leaders at the heart of the movement, were detained along with several key figures and reportedly charged with contempt of court for obstruction.
Scuffles and fighting broke out when riot police moved against hundreds of demonstrators in the Mong Kok district following clashes overnight.
The clearance of the site is a big breakthrough for the authorities but protesters still occupy segments of roads, blocking traffic in the city’s Admiralty district near government offices and Causeway Bay, a major shopping area.
The campaigners have been on the streets since early October, calling for a free choice of leader in the 2017 election.
