Lava flow break outs remain active in Hawaii

A slow-moving lava flow from an erupting volcano on Hawaii's Big Island continued to advance on Tuesday, a day after one of the breakouts destroyed a home.

The home was ignited by a finger of lava that broke out from the main flow on Sunday, even as officials said the leading edge of the lava had come to a near standstill.

The breakout remains slow-moving in a north-south direction toward a structure on the same parcel of land that the home sits, according to local media reports.

Officials say the closest home to the lava flow is about 400-500 yards (365.76m - 457.2m) down the slope, but the breakout is moving in a parallel path and not toward the structure.

Another breakout breached a fence near the Pahoa Transfer Station sending lava onto the driveway that encircles the facility, local media reported.

Pahoa, a town of about 800 people, stands on the site of a former sugar cane plantation on the eastern edge of the Big Island.
