STORY: Close to 300 protesting fishermen in Quintero, Chile, barricaded city streets and clashed with police on Wednesday.

Police fired tear gas and water to disperse the protesters, while demonstrators hurled rocks back at authorities.

The fishermen were protesting an alleged breach of agreement on behalf of ENAP, Chile's national oil company, following an oil spill that occurred on September 24.

The demonstrators claim that ENAP has not fulfilled its promises to assist in the clean up effort following the spill.

The oil spill occurred when intake hoses broke away from an ENAP tanker. As a result, approximately 22,000 liters (4839 UK gallons) of oil was dumped into Quintero Bay, causing extensive damage to marine life in the area and adversely affecting the livelihood of local fishermen.
