Ukraine's rebels open school doors to Russian education
Ukraine’s eastern rebel regions appear to have already decided what course of education they want to follow, regardless of the results of Sunday’s separatist elections.
Five tons of school text books have been sent from the Russian federation to Donetsk. All schools in the rebel-controlled area will adopt Russian standards but apparently not the system, according to one headmaster.
Andrey Udovenko, headmaster of school number 61 in Donetsk, told euronews: “Because of the development of our relationship with the Russian Federation and the Customs Union (Russia, Kazakhstan & Belarus) we will integrate our system with the Custom Union’s education system. That doesn’t mean that we will use the Russian Federation’s education system.”
Whether it is the Customs Union system or Russia’s, one thing that appears clear is that the Ukrainian curriculum will not be on schools’ agendas.
Igor Kostynok, Donetsk People’s Republic Education Minister, said: “We are witnessing the celebration of the moment where we get new school text books, which have much of the standards (Russian) we are talking about today and will be used for teaching pupils.”
The new system comes into force early next year and officials in Donetsk say parents will still have a choice as to whether their children will use Russian or Ukrainian as their main language.
