Pakistan's female superhero joins the fight against polio

She's Pakistan's first female superhero and she's joined the country's fight against polio.

The animated series, 'Burka Avenger' features Jiya, a teacher whose alter ego is a burka-wearing super heroine.

Creator Aaron Haroon Rashid says each episode focuses on a social issue and polio is on the rise in Pakistan.

SOUNDBITE: Aaron Haroon Rashid, creator of 'The Burka Avenger', saying (English):

"The WHO (World Health Organization) has declared a medical emergency; there have been 200 cases now. It's alarming, the situation is alarming. So in this particular case we decided to tackle the polio issue head on."

Rashid says "Burka Avenger" aims to emphasize the importance of the polio vaccination in an exciting way.

The episode also highlights the plight of health workers in Pakistan, who are often attacked by militants claiming polio vaccinations are part of a plot to sterilize Muslims.
