Elton John awarded for efforts to combat AIDS

British singer and AIDS activist Elton John, along with his partner David Furnish, were honored for their fight against the disease at a gala dinner in Washington D.C. on Saturday (October 25) by the Human Rights Council. John and Furnish were presented with the HRC's National Equity Award for the the work done by their organization, the Elton John AIDS Foundation. During John's address to the invited guests, he urged the gay community to do more to protect themselves and their partners from HIV/AIDS. The Human Rights Council announced on Saturday that the Elton John AIDS Foundation had awarded it a 300,000 dollar (USD) grant to increase awareness about HIV prevention. John is one Britain's most prominent musicians and gay celebrities, and has often used his status in the music world to make a statement on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality.
