Programming reaction-diffusion spatio-temporal patterns with DNA [A/B]

The generation of macroscopic spatiotemporal order in a system of microscopic objects is a fundamental question with important implications in biological morphogenesis. Self-assembly and self-organization are two fundamental processes that contribute to the emergence of such order, in particular in molecular systems. I will first review some examples of these two processes and make a distinction between the two, with an emphasis in nucleic acids. I will then introduce an experimental set of highly programmable synthetic chemical reaction networks based on DNA. Finally, I will show that this set of reactions is particularly advantageous for studying spatio-temporal chemical self-organization.
