A massive house fire broke out in Wellsville, Pennsylvania on Tuesday. Hundreds of snakes reportedly perished in the blaze.

The fire required the response of about 100 volunteer firefighters and 60 different trucks from four counties.

It took about 5 hours for them to get the blaze under control. The owner of the house is a snake breeder.

The creatures were kept in the basement of the residence and many of them died as a result of the fire.

Fortunately the couple who lived in the home made it out safely. No other injuries were reported either.

Tackling the flames was a huge issue for fire crews. Wellsville Fire Department spokesperson, Dave Summers remarked “It started very early, very difficult, very foggy complex architecture of the home. It's a very, very unique and unusual structure, metal roof, things of that nature made a very touchy at first for us.”

An exceptionally long driveway also made the extinguishing efforts tougher. The cause of the fire is thought to be related to hot ashes.

The homeowner had placed the ashes in a plastic bucket and pushed them towards the side believing they had cooled off. It’s suspected the blaze originated in an area near the rear porch before spreading to the remainder of the house.

There is currently no estimate on the damage. The homeowners are receiving assistance from the Red Cross.
