Soldier shot dead in Ottawa, police lock down city center

Central Ottawa has been placed on lockdown, while police continue their search for more suspects in the dramatic shooting incident that left two people dead and the normally placid city in a state of shock.

The drama began here, near the National War Memorial, where a gunman shot and fatally wounded a soldier.

Then, more than 30 shots rang out in a nearby Parliament building. The alleged gunman was shot and killed by security staff.

Despite earlier reports from witnesses, police say they cannot confirm that the same man carried out both attacks.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) OTTAWA POLICE CHIEF CHARLES BORDELEAU, SAYING:

"The sequence of events subsequent to that - there was an incident on Parliament Hill. We're not in the position to confirm the timing or that sequence of events because that is still under investigation."

And that investigation began in dramatic style, police and tactical units flooding the streets.
