Fresh clashes erupt in Hong Kong's 'umbrella revolution'

Using umbrellas to protect themselves from batons and pepper spray, pro-democracy demonstrators have clashed with police in Hong Kong.
The protesters were trying to reclaim a major demo site in Mong Kok, which had been cleared earlier on Friday (October 17).
The scuffles broke out when a crowd gathered after work and attempted to breach police lines, chanting “Open the road”.
Police actions have come under increasing scrutiny after a video emerged of officers beating a handcuffed protester on Wednesday (October 15).
“I think the police are being very violent. They just used the broken umbrellas to hit us,” explained one protester.
The protests are now running into a fourth week. Led by students, they are demanding that Beijing allow open nominations when they vote for their next leader in 2017. Talks are expected next week between the student leaders and Chief Executive CY Leung.
