Iraq unveils new heavy weapons to be deployed against Islamic State

The Iraqi army will deploy a new weapon known as the TOS-1A multiple rocket launcher to the frontlines said the country's ministry of defence in a video handout.

The Russian-made weapons will boost the military capabilities of the Iraqi forces in their fight against militants of the Islamic State (IS).

"The brave Iraqi soldiers of the artillery branch have completed theoretical and practical training on a heavy thermobaric weapon. This is a strategic launcher and will add huge firing velocity and provide significant support on the battlefield," said Artillery Brigadier Saad al-Alaq, speaking at a military camp in Baghdad.

The combat system, which will be used by Iraq's artillery units for the first time, consists of a combat vehicle, 24-barrel rocket launcher, and loading vehicle.
