In the Eye of a Toad

August is a heavy monsoon rainfall month in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona. Here's a close up of a familiar visitor during this time - a male Sonoran Desert Toad. The opening shot is a female. You can tell them apart by the size of their bodies and arms. Females are usually larger but the males have the larger arm muscles, plus black pads on their toes to help them grip the female in breeding season. This male was found outside my duck's pool where he had recently been swimming.
