Dunya News - NA-149 by-election: ECP rejects request for army deployment

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday rejected a request for deployment of army during by-election in NA-149 constituency of Multan, Dunya News reported.

The plea for army deployment was submitted by an independent candidate.

According to ECP spokesperson, order for deployment of Rangers personnel has already been given on request of the district administration, thus, army deployment is not necessary.

On the other hand, ballot boxes, electoral lists, stamps and stamp pads have arrived at the Government Emerson College in Multan.

District Coordination Officer (DCO) has announced holiday and imposition of 144 in the city during election.

Meanwhile, eight contingents of Rangers will be deployed at sensitive polling stations.

The Election Commission has also issue code of conduct for the polls, according to which display of arms and use of loudspeaker will be banned.

According to ECP, all contesting candidates and their supporters shall avoid scrupulously all activities which are offences under the election laws, such as bribing of voters, intimidation and personation, canvassing within 400 yards of a polling station including setting up of camps.

The by-polls for the seat are scheduled for October 16. Polling will start at 8:00pm and conclude at 5:00pm.
