South Africa waits to see what punishment is given Pistorius

Paralympian Oscar Pistorius entered the courtroom in Pretoria on Monday at the start of a week that may be his last as a free man for up to fifteen years.

The sentencing procedure for his crime, found guilty of culpable homicide, South Africa’s equivalent of manslaughter, for the shooting of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, may take several days, and there is no minimum sentence for the crime in South Africa.

Furthermore, once sentencing is complete the way is open for the state to appeal against Judge Thokozile Masipa’s decision if it so chooses, and go for the murder conviction it originally wanted.

Anti-domestic violence campaigners were angered by Pistorius escaping a murder rap, and many are saying if he walks free it will again be confirmation there is still one justice for the wealthy whites and another for blacks in South Africa.
