He was always in the thick of it -- and we're not talking about his fur coat.
Sausage the riot dog became a celebrity in his own right... running alongside anti-austerity protesters in Greece back in 2011.
But his short, courageous life has come to an end -- officials say Sausage has died of a heart attack.
He was all bark, no bite... and his legacy will live on.
Sausage was runner up for Time Magazine's "Animal of Year" at the height of the protests.
He's been immortalized in countless photos. Many of which made the front page of Greek newspapers.
Standing tall in the midst of crisis, the stray mongrel gave more than enough support to the Greek citizens...
