Heavy black smoke and flames could be seen and explosions heard near the Donetsk international airport on Thursday as fighting between separatists and Ukrainian troops for control over the airport continued despite a ceasefire. Sound of artillery fire resonated through the city, leaving streets in districts close to the airport nearly deserted.
The standoff in the airport has been going on for months with casualties on both sides.
Sporadic shelling of the city districts close to the airport also takes place. On Wednesday, the first day of school in Donetsk, at least ten people were killed when shells hit a school grounds and mini-bus in the city center.
The rebels hold key points inside the city itself, an industrial hub with a pre-war population of about 1 million.
