Thousands of pharmacists, doctors, dentists and other self-employed professional workers flooded the streets of Paris, Tuesday, to protest against the proposed deregulation of their professions.
Demonstrators held smoke grenades and smashed medical equipment in protest, as they marched down the Esplanade des Invalides towards the Senate and the ministries of economy and health, carrying signs with slogans such as “Health is not for sale.”
Union Nationale des Professions Liberales (UNPL) and other trade unions had called for the nationwide strike, which saw 90 percent of pharmacies across the country close down for the day of protest. Pharmacists are worried reforms will allow supemarkets to sell over-the-counter drugs, thereby undermining their business.
