Belgian City To Build Underground Beer Pipeline

In order to alleviate traffic in the area, the city of Bruges will build an underground pipeline from a 500 year old brewery to a bottling plant.

The Belgium city of Bruges is home to a nearly 500-year-old brewery.

Along with making beer, the De Halve Maan brewery, located in what's considered the "Venice of the North," is a popular tourist destination, drawing over 100,000 visitors each year.

A lot of traffic is caused within the area by trucks carrying the bottled beer.

In order to alleviate the traffic, an underground pipeline will be constructed, delivering beer from the brewery to a nearby bottling plant.

The pipeline will span two miles.

Using technology that's proven successful with gas and oil lines, the construction of the new pipeline won't disturb city's medieval architecture.

The brewery's director said, “The idea is born of environmental and quality of life concerns and not economic ones."

The cost of the pipeline, the first in Belgium, will be covered by the brewery and construction is planned to begin sometime next year.
