U.S. President Barack Obama said the world is uniting against the threat posed by Islamic State (IS) fighters and he will use the upcoming United Nations General Assembly to continue to "rally the world" against the militant group.

"Because we're leading the right way, more nations are joining our coalition. Over 40 countries have offered to help the broad campaign against ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) so far, " Obama said in his weekly radio address on Saturday (September 20).

"This week, at the United Nations, I'll continue to rally the world against this threat," he added.

The president is scheduled to attend the annual gathering of world leaders at the U.N. General Assembly next week where Islamic State is expected to be one of the key topics of discussion. He is slated to give a speech to the world body on Wednesday (September 24).

"We'll lead a broad coalition of nations who have a stake in this fight.
