Project Android launches in India as Google seeks low-cost advantage

Monday sees the launch of Google’s ambitious Android One project, launching smartphones onto the Indian market priced at just 81 euros.

In partnership with local telecoms players Micromax, Karbonn and Spice Mobiles, Google is trying to capture the low-cost segment of the world’s fastest-growing smartphone market.

Google is not stopping in India. It plans to launch Android One in Indonesia, the Philippines and other South Asian countries by the end of 2014 and in more countries in 2015.

It will not all be plain sailing, however, as there are 80 smartphone competitors in a crowded market.
