Herrera and Karan live up to style at New York Fashion Week
It was a highly anticipated show at New York Fashion Week and veteran designer Carolina Herrera didn’t disappoint.
In what some fashion critics described as a “breathtaking show”, the designer sent a collection of beautifully deconstructed floral gowns down the runway.
Digital prints and geometric embellishments in technical fabrics brought a sharper edge to the collection:
“The inspiration was really the colour code of a flower that I took and I digitalized. The fabrics that I have been using are very techno fabrics, which mold the dresses in a different way,” said the designer.
As usual, the line included sophisticated day looks and classic ball gowns, which have become a red carpet fixture.
The 75-year old designer has been dressing First Ladies for decades from Jackie Onassis to Michelle Obama.
For her Spring/Summer 2015 show at New York Fashion Week, Donna Karan didn’t look far for inspiration: the designer – who is as closely associated with New York City as the Empire State building – simply turned to the streets of her own city.
“I felt that I’ve travelled the world. I’ve done India, I’ve done Africa, I’ve done Bali, I’ve done Haiti, I’ve done all the countries that I love and I said, the art in New York is just that wonderful, so why not celebrate the art in New York and the whole graffiti mode and all of that,” said Karan.
Entitled ‘New York Nation’, her new collection payed tribute to the Big Apple’s many cultures and neighbourhoods through an explosion of bright patterns and a heavy dose of textures.
Adorned with towering Pharrell-style hats, the outfits featured full skirts and geometric prints, cool tech hoodies and crop tops worn over stretchy pencil skirts.
There were also new silhouettes, like the comfortable yet elegant belted shirtdresses – all perfectly tailored in true Karan style.
