UN envoy arrives in Damascus on peace mission as war rages

And against this backdrop, UN Special Envoy Staffan Mistura arrives for his first visit to Damascus, seeking a peaceful resolution to the Syrian conflict.
He is expected to request a permanent residence in Damascus, unlike his predecessors who stayed outside the country.
He is also due to meet Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as well as figures from the domestic opposition.
