US government confirms death of American fighter in Syria
The State Department says 33 year old Douglas McAuthor McCain was fighting alongside Islamic State militants in Syria when he was killed over the weekend.
McCain was identified by the US passport he was carrying when he died during a firefight in the city of Aleppo.
In Syria, McCain was better known as Duale Khalid. He had joined the fight with Islamic State, having converted to Islam ten years ago.
A high school friend from Minneapolis remembers him as a different person.
