Turkey’s ruling AK party has a new leader.
With former boss Recep Tayyip Erdogan now president and constitutionally barred from leading a party, the incoming prime minister and loyal right-hand man Ahmet Davutoglu has taken over the job.
The former foreign minister may now see his office diminished as Erdogan wants to reshape Turkey into a more presidential democracy.
“Erdogan, who was elected president, determined the road map for the new prime minister clearly. Remember what he said. He talked about his struggle with the parallel state, and underlined the fact that he chose Davutoglu because of his shared determination to do something about it,” explained journalist Murat Akgun.
Davutoglu faces taking the AK party into elections in less than a year. He may find it hard to set a style of his own should he want to do so, with such a dominant figure as president, to whom he owes his political career.
“There was no contest for the leadership at the AK Party Congress, in power for the last 12 years. Ahmet Davutoglu replaces Erdogan. This congress was more about making a show of power and unity,” said euronews’ Bora Bayraktar in Ankara.
