Thousands mourn at funeral of Michael Brown

Thousands of mourners have attended a two- and-a-half-hour funeral service for Michael Brown, the black teenager shot dead by a white police officer

He was laid to rest in St Louis in Missouri in the United States.

Civil rights leader Reverend Al Sharpton delivered one of the eulogies, criticising those who had rioted and looted stores after the teenager was shot.

“Michael Brown must be remembered for more than disturbances. He must be remembered for this is when they started changing what was going on,” Sharpton said.

On Sunday evening, Brown’s father appealed for calm and peace on the day of his son’s funeral, a wish which was clearly respected.

Michael Brown’s death has focused attention on racial tension and relations in the United States but Monday’s service was a chance to celebrate his life.
