Tango dancers put best feet forward

Some of the world's top tango dancers sizzled on the dance floor in Buenos Aires during the salon tango competition as part of the annual World Tango Championship.

The tango - born in the 19th century ports of Buenos Aires and danced by the lower class - gradually made it onto the world stage in the 1940's with big orchestras playing sultry sounds that evolved from its humble beginnings.

Dancer Nicole Avalos hoped to leave her nerves behind and soak up the experience.

SOUNDBITE: Nicole Avalos, dancer, saying (Spanish):

"As a couple to be able to get over this nervousness of being in the World Championship, being evaluated, trusting the other, experiencing the music, and in spite of all the circumstances to be able to really feel the tango and to say, what am I doing? How do I feel? And to see if I love it so much that I can forget everything and go on."

The international Tango Festival and Championship opened on August 13 and runs through August 26.
