Danvers and Wenham police along with public works employees responded to the scene when a woodchuck got stuck in a sewer grate.

If you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of a woodchuck wandering around in your yard, but usually the creatures are pretty quick at running away when people are around.

A woodchuck in Danvers, Massachusetts wasn’t able to scurry off, however, and needed some help from humans. Danvers and Wenham police along with public works employees responded to the scene when the creature got stuck in a sewer grate.

A passerby called for help after hearing the animal making sounds of distress. The woodchuck’s head was left poking out of the square-shaped opening.

While he helplessly looked towards the sky, his body dangled over the sewer. Police got to the area at about 10:15 in the morning. They managed to pry the grate up from the ground.

At that point, the woodchuck was able to wriggle free. As soon as he was out, he scurried off in some nearby brush.

The rescue operation took about 20 minutes. The Danvers Police Department posted about the ordeal on its Facebook page.

One note reads “This little guy was having a rough Friday morning! Thanks to Danvers DPW for the assist, he is free and well!”
