The return of the famed "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" crushed the competition at the box office with some $65 million dollars over the weekend in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales, according to studio estimates.

Megan Fox stars as a reporter who helps the pizza-loving turtles fight crime in New York City.

The film is a revival of a 1980s comic book franchise and popular TV cartoons.

Falling behind the film featuring the hard-shelled turtle heroes was "Guardians of the Galaxy," which dominated the box office just one week ago.

It collected some $41.5 million in ticket sales. The outer space hit stars Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana as space warriors who lead a group of heroes.

It was trailed by tornado thriller "Into the Storm" , which landed in third place at the box office with $18 million.
