Egypt: Court bans Freedom and Justice Party

An Egyptian court has ruled to dissolve the Freedom and Justice Party, the political wing of the banned Muslim Brotherhood.

The Islamist movement’s leader Mohamed Badie was sentenced to death earlier this year.

Saturday’s ruling forbids members of the Brotherhood from taking part in electoral politics.

A court banned the Muslim Brotherhood in September but that ruling did not mention its political wing.

The movement has seen hundreds of its members killed and thousands detained since then army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi overthrew elected president and Brotherhood member Mohamed Morsi last year.
