Trapped in the rubble of her home for more than two days, 88-year old Xiong Zhengfen was finally pulled to safety, shaken but uninjured.

It had taken rescuers six hours to reach her.

She emerged with her head wrapped in a bandage to protect her eyes from the glare of the sunlight after fifty hours in the dark.

Remarkably, according to Dr Li Zhikui, Xiong was in good health.

(SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) DOCTOR OF KUNMING HOSPITAL OF TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE, LI ZHIKUI SAYING:

"After talking to her, we determined that her vital signs are relatively good and emotionally she's relatively stable. (I) don't think she's sustained any major injuries."

But Xiong is one of the lucky survivors. The death toll after Sunday's devastating earthquake in Yunnan Province stands at nearly 600, with 2400 injured.

Officials say those numbers are certain to rise as the search continues.
