Turning of the Floats: Minamikannon Yama!

Witness “the turning” of the floats, also called Tsujimawashi (辻回し) in Japanese during the Ato-Matsuri in Kyoto.
The turning of the floats (Tsujimawashi) is a spectacular event of the Gion Matsuri. The floats don’t have a rudder to steer with, so split bamboo are places under the wheels and water is applied to the wheels to allow them to slide while the floats are pulled from the side. The Gion Bayashi musicians, shouts of the pullers and oohs and ahhs from the spectators fill the air. With each successful pull there is laud applause!
