A series of huge explosions shook Gaza right up until Saturday's brief 12-hour truce kicked in.

Several houses were reduced to rubble in the onslaught.

Gaza health officials said 18 members of one family were killed when their house was hit.

Earlier militants fired a barrage of rockets from Gaza, triggering sirens across much of southern and central Israel although no casualties were reported.

The truce, which began at 0500GMT, hasn't impressed many of Gaza's residents.
