'Apostasy' woman arrives in Italy

Mariam Yahya Ibrahim's exit from Sudan after being spared execution for apostasy has been a long one but finally she's arrived in Italy.

Her death sentence for allegedly converting to Christianity from Islam sparked an international outcry.

A Sundanese court quashed the conviction last month but then she was stopped from leaving the country because the government said she had falsified papers.

Her arrival in Rome with her two children and South Sudanese-American husband was welcomed by the Italian Deputy Foreign Minister.

(SOUNDBITE)(English) ITALIAN DEPUTY FOREIGN MINISTER LAPO PISTELLI SAYING:

"The Holy Father was informed yesterday by the Italian Prime Minister about this happy end, the conclusion of this event, and he has expressed his feelings of gratitude to the Italian government for this action and his gratitude and feelings for the family and on the positive case of Marian so we will see in the next hours what will happen."
