With the death toll escalating an urgent search for a ceasefire in the Gaza conflict is under way with the arrival of US Secretary of State John Kerry in Cairo.

Along with talks which include UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Kerry has brought a US offer of $47m (35m euros) in humanitarian aid for Gaza.

“We are deeply concerned about the consequences of Israel’s appropriate and legitimate effort to defend itself…..But always in any kind of conflict there is a concern about civilians, about children, women, communities that are caught in. And we are particularly trying to focus on a way to respond to their very significant needs,” said John Kerry on his arrival in Cairo.
