Dutch FM: Netherlands united in face of plane tragedy

Citizens of the Netherlands have experienced grief, sadness, anger and despair all since Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine last week, killing all 298 aboard, including , the country's foreign minister said Monday (July 21).

Speaking to journalists at the Dutch UN Mission in New York, Foreign Minister Frans Timmermans said the tragedy has been worsened by the geopolitical conflict in the region.

"The tragedy of the loss of life, 300 people, almost 200 of my compatriots, has had a huge impact on Dutch society," Timmermans said. "An impact greater when we encountered so much difficulties in trying to secure the site of the tragedy and recover the remains."

The plane was shot down last Thursday (July 17). The United States and its allies have blamed the pro-Russian rebels for downing of the plane while Russia's defense ministry challenged those accusations and said Ukrainian warplanes had flown close
