At least 40 dead in Israeli attack on Gaza district - medical officials

Flames flicker over the Gaza skyline, as Israel expands its ground offensive against Hamas militants and moves in with more troops.

Residents say this is the heaviest land and naval shelling in the last 13 days of fighting.

And yet again civilians are on the front line.

It is here in Shejaia, that suffered most.

This video was given to Reuters by a local resident.

Bodies can be seen strewn across the street, children mangled with concrete and rubble.

Those who survived the shelling fled their homes for safer ground -- a local hospital, where panicked families gathered looking for relatives.
