In another conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Ukrainian military shot down Siberia Airlines Flight 1812, killing all 78 people on board.

The plane, a passenger jet, was shot down over the Black Sea as it traveled from Tel Aviv to Novosibirsk in Russia. Officials in Kiev denied involvement, Russian crash investigators said the plane was hit by a Ukrainian missile.

On July 3, 1988, crew on the U.S. Navy cruiser Vincennes mistook Iran Air Flight 655, an Airbus A300, for an F-14 fighter jet and fired two missiles, shooting down the jet. All 290 passengers and crew members were killed.

The incident occurred as the Vincennes was in a battle with Iranian ships. The flight had taken off from Bandar Abbas International Airport in Iran and was headed for Dubai.

As a civil war raged in Mozambique, an Air Malawi fkight was shot down near the town of Ulongwe. The flight was traveling from Balantyre, in Malawi, to the capital Lilongwe.

When the plane went down, 8 passengers and 2 crew members were killed.
