Arab League foreign ministers back Egypt's call for a Gaza ceasefire

Arab League foreign ministers holding an emergency meeting in Cairo have called on both Israel and Palestinian militants to observe a dawn ceasefire.
After backing the Egyptian initiative, the ministers also reflected on a call by the Palestinian leadership to put the region under international protection.
However political observer Nabil Fahmi remains sceptical about the meeting’s outcome:
“Regarding the Israeli side and the Palestinian issue, the Israeli side does not respond to the decisions of the Arab League nor UN resolutions or the Security Council. Unfortunately all the decisions so far taken by the Security Council have not been implemented by Israel, not even in one instance.”
Israel has said it will discuss the truce proposal although those discussions will take place after its proposed 6 am start and Hamas stipulates a political deal is essential before any ceasefire.
Euronews correspondent Mohammed Shaikhibrahim who is in Cairo reports:
“Arab and international efforts are growing to stop the war in Gaza, but the decision of reaching a ceasefire remains linked to the goals and the results that both the warring sides seek to achieve.”
