Libyan government condemns attacks on Tripoli airport

Seven people have been killed and more than 30 injured in heavy fighting between rival militias vying for control of Libya’s main airport

Explosions and anti-aircraft gunfire were heard from early Sunday morning forcing flights to be cancelled in some of the worst violence seen in the Libyan capital for six months.

The fighting is part of growing turmoil in the North African oil producer, where the government is unable to control battle-hardened militias that helped to overthrow Muammar Gaddafi in 2011 but continue to defy state authority.
