Tommy Hilfiger picks next "Designer for Tomorrow"

Tommy Hilfiger may be used to journalists scrutinising his new looks on the catwalk, but today the designer shoe was on the other foot as he judged the Designer for Tomorrow awards as part of Berlin Fashion Week.

Five designers from around the world competed for the prize of having mentoring by Hilfiger and sponsorship for their next collection.

Each designer brought a very different look to the catwalk from punk to eccentric to a twist on the classic ball gown. But it was Italian menswear designer Matteo Lamandini who scooped the prestigious award for his checkered suits inspired by the "zoot suit", an important fashion statement in 1940s United States

So how did Hilfiger decide on which designer rocked the catwalk?

SOUNDBITE US designer Tommy Hilfiger, saying (English):

"I think consistency and the audience reacted in a very positive way. I think that when you know you know. I think it was quite obvious."

As part of the prize, Lamandini will also
