Proposing to start a Monday Tradition after the successful Tango Tuesdays.Latina Lunes~Mexican Mondays~to give a spicy south Texas-south of the border flavor to the music put up on DM by this group. Carmen Hernandez and Laura Hernandez born 1921 and 1926 respectively in Kingsville, Texas, at the north end of the famous King Ranch, sang throughout their childhood. The sisters modernized the style of the traditional Mexican female singer from one of the emotional nasal delivery to a polished sophisticated sound. The sisters toured with Alberto (Beto) Villa of Falfurrias, Texas. Beto was one of the best known Mexican American band leaders in the US and was known as the father of the Orquesta Tejana. Female duos were becoming popular in the US in the 1930s-40s and Carmen Y Laura became one of the most popular of those "Tex-Mex" duos. To equal that feat, Beto convinced Narcisco Martinez, father of the Tejano Conjunto, to also tour with the group. They played from Florida to California and north to Illinois.
Carmen Y Laura became professional when Carmen's husband, Armando Marroquin, established his own recording studios in his and Carmen's kitchen in Alice, Texas to record the sisters and many other Tejano musicians so he could distribute the records to his many jukeboxes scattered over south Texas. The sisters became so popular that Armando had to combine with Ideal Records of San Benito, Texas to get wider distribution.
Beto, Carmen Y Laura, Narcisco and the band introduced swing, jazz, and boleros in Spanisn and English to their adoring audiences. The sisters are enshrined in the Texas Music Hall of Fame.
