White House monitoring arrest of German accused of spying for US

The White House is closely monitoring the arrest of a Germany citizen who has been accused of "working with a U.S. intelligence agency."

Press Secretary Josh Earnest said that he could not comment on the matter but stressed that the U.S.-Germany relationship is strong and is a "very close partnership on a range of security issues, including some intelligence issues."

"That partnership is built on respect and it's built on decades of cooperation and shared values," Earnest told reporters Monday (July 7). "All of those things are high priorities, not just for this administration, but for the country. So we're going to work with the Germans to resolve this situation appropriately."

German authorities arrested a German man employed by the country's foreign intelligence agency (BND) on suspicion of spying for the United States, two politicians with knowledge of the affair told Reuters on Friday.
