Controversial Mayor of Toronto Rob Ford has returned to work following two months of rehab for alcohol and drugs issues.

Last year he admitted to smoking crack, buying illegal drugs, and drink-driving. He had insisted for months that he did not have a problem.

Ford gave an emotional statement to gathered reporters:

“I sincerely apologise, not just to the people of Toronto, but to every single person who was hurt by my words and my actions,” he said. “It was never, never my intention to embarrass the city or offend my fellow members of council,” the mayor added.

He said he had been in complete denial about his drinking and drug use. Staff at the rehab clinic saved his life by helping him confront he personal demons, he said.

Ford will continue his re-election campaign ahead of October’s mayoral elections.
