An apologetic Toronto Mayor Rob Ford spoke to press on Monday (June 30) upon returning to the office after spending two months in rehab for alcohol abuse.

"I had convinced myself that I did not have a problem, but it soon became obvious that my alcohol and drug use was having a serious, serious impact on my family, and on my health, and on my job as mayor," Ford said, his voice quivering.

He also apologized to the people of Toronto and to all those who were negatively affected by his actions.

"When I look back on some of the things I have said, and some of the things I did when I was using, I am ashamed, embarrassed, and humiliated," he said.

Ford went on leave from both his job and his re-election campaign in May to seek treatment for alcohol abuse. He shot to prominence last year after admitting to smoking crack, buying illegal drugs and driving after drinking, after he insisted for months he did not have a problem.
