Bomb blast in Beirut

Nineteen people were wounded when a suicide bomber blew up his car in Beirut.

The explosion just before midnight also killed the bomber.

Windows in nearby buildings were shattered.

A Hezbollah lawmaker says this latest bombing is part of a campaign by the insurgency sweeping Iraq to destablize the Middle East.

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) HEZBOLLAH MP, ALI MOKDAD, SAYING:

"Yes, this is part of this project, the project of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant for the region. Lebanon today is part of this region in which terrorism is attacking, and this is the Middle East, they want it unstable and some of the terrorists are realizing that, by killing themselves to kill a whole nation."

Lebanon has suffered from sectarian violence that spilled over from the civil war in neighbouring Syria.

Lebanese politicians say they won't let the new insurgency in Iraq spread to their country.
