Burying the dead in Iraq

They have come to bury their dead in Kirkuk.

Shi'ite ethnic Turkmen bury 15 people from a northern Iraqi village who were killed Wednesday when Sunni Muslim militants attacked the village of Basheer, just south of Kirkuk.

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has made swift territorial gains across Iraq as it pursues the goal of its own power base.

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) MOURNER, ABU MOHAMMED, SAYING:

"We are from al-Basheer village where the terrorists attacked us. Many were killed and wounded there and we have not been able to evacuate them so far. There are dead bodies of women, children and elderly men. And we could not return to the village. Anyone who tells you that we have returned to our homes is a liar. We are all fleeing the village."

Many continue to flee their homes in fear as fighting threatens to tear the country apart, and is highlighting divisions among regional powers, notably between Iran and Saudi Arabia.
