Transgender priest preaches at Washington's National Cathedral

It's a first for the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.

Openly transgender Reverend Dr. Cameron Partridge delivers a sermon in celebration of the cathedral's LGBT pride month.

His call: to deepen understanding of the lesbian, gay, bisexual -- and particularly transgender -- community.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) REVEREND DR. CAMERON PARTRIDGE SAYING:

"I am moved by how our decisions are calling us into a deeper awareness into the mystery of the human person. For at the end of the day, to respect the dignity of every human being, as we promise in our baptismal covenant is to actively create space for the unfolding of our lifelong growth, as members of Christ's body."

Reverend Gene Robinson -- the first openly gay Episcopal bishop -- applauds his words.
